Why choose me?

The Garden Fairy is me, Sue Dilworth, a garden consultant, offering garden advice to homeowners across Surrey and the South East.

I come from a family of keen gardeners and horticulturists with my maternal family being actively involved in horticulture, agriculture and the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). I spent my formative years in our country garden with my parents and more formal, landscaped gardens with my grandparents. From picking Victoria plums in our orchard with mum, to chasing pheasants off the sprouting broccoli with dad, my childhood was spent in harmony with the rhythms of the natural world around me. It was my mother and grandmother who inspired my passion for gardening and by osmosis I accumulated a rooted knowledge of plants, soil types and above all patience - a garden is always evolving – never ‘finished’.

Prior to my career in Garden Consultation, I worked as a secondary school English teacher for twelve years and more recently in educational recruitment, before realising that I craved a more creative and outdoors work/life balance. I enrolled on a combined RHS Level 2 course, combining Principles of Plant Growth, Propagation and Development with Principles of Garden Planning, Establishment and Maintenance and set up The Garden Fairy business shortly after.

What I do.

I thrive on working with clients who have recently had their garden landscaped and don’t know what to do with it, as well as those with established gardens who want to enhance specific ‘problem areas’ like shaded borders or sloping spots. I work with you to teach you how to manage the upkeep of your existing planting, advise what plants to purchase, explore how colour schemes work with plants and provide you with a general education when it comes to gardening.

I work on a broad range of projects from small courtyards and roof gardens to larger landscaped gardens to country estates. I frequently collaborate with landscapers, garden maintenance companies, property developers and estate managers. When gardens are overgrown or landscaped projects complete, I can work with you to keep that garden look and design alive.

My style is first and foremost inspired by your taste and aspirations. I want you to enjoy gardening and educate you about what your garden needs to thrive. My goal is to make your garden enjoyable, manageable and a space which you can truly relax.
